    WHAT'S WRONG WITH ANGER

It was not always easy to hold fast to my conviction that anger was unhealthy. All around us there hovers the cultural norm that anger is a normal part of being human, provided nobody we care about gets bashed or killed. The angry response of powerful nations to disobedient lesser ones is well known and generally accepted. Most of the heroes in action movies, computer games, television dramas and comics are glorified by their righteous wrath. Many people recount with pride their angry response to everyday situations. Anger is regarded as ok, cool, even necessary.

To reinforce my conviction in the face of such all-round glorification of anger I developed a list of reasons for holding fast. I was determined to win, to banish all anger from my life. I’ll share with you now some of those reasons, without elaborating on them.

What’s wrong with anger?

Those filled with anger cannot experience contentment nor enjoy a peaceful life with others.

An angry person will not be able to achieve anything worthwhile.

Anger is a toxin. It poisons the blood, leading to cancer and other illnesses.

The angry person is hated and feared by some and is an object of derision in the eyes of many.

Anger can be the cause of total ruin.

It is hard to be honest with someone who gets angry.

When we get angry this says to others that it’s okay for them to be abusive as well.

The wounds inflicted by angry words can take years before they really heal.

The angry person forgets common sense no less than someone who is intoxicated with alcohol.

The angry person behaves like a spoiled child.

People avoid the one who is angry.

The angry person is really abusing himself.

Indulging in anger always closes our heart.

Angry people are like fighting dogs, each one unable to stop.

Once you’re firm in the conviction that anger is not to be indulged, good progress can be made in transmuting this force into something worthwhile.
